Why Napoleon Hill Went Broke… “The Greatest Discovery of the 21st Century”

Think and Grow Rich first published in 1923 is the number one best selling book on personal achievement and success.  Even today, the book still remains a best seller, selling millions of copies each year.  In fact, most self made Millionaires got their first glimpse of wealth from this great book.  Walk into any successful persons office and you will find a copy of this legendary book, “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. mastermindipad

How is it then that the author of the best selling success book and the greatest teacher of success end up broke so many times with little to no assets to his name?  How can the man whose teaching and books are responsible for creating more Millionaires than any other Success teacher in history end up this way?  Many people are shocked when they find out that this great author lived much of his life without riches yet spent most of his adult life teaching others how to acquire them.  His writings and teachings are outstanding and have stood the test of time throughout these many years as testaments that his teachings were sound and proven.

The individuals who followed his teachings starting with nothing and ended up massive amounts of wealth and success are too numerous to record, yet he himself Napoleon Hill was a person that lasting riches eluded.  His life was one of volatile success and failures, riches and lack, with the scales leaning much more on the failure side than the success side.  Although he did hit the wealth factor a couple of times it was short lived and soon took wings never to return again.

For many, this seems to be incomprehensible and without an answer.  How could this be, was it due to lack of personal morals, lack of integrity, reckless living, poor management, a streak of bad luck, down right stupidity?  Like all of us, I am sure he had his share in dabbing in all the above, yet none of those elements was the causative factor of him being the greatest teacher of success yet going broke.

The sad story is told, at one point later in his life, he lived in a small rented room alone, and towards the end was trying to sell the famous typewriter he wrote “Think and Grow Rich” on for $50.00.

I was personally at the event of the Napoleon Hill Foundation Movie in 2009 where two of his “Think and Grow Rich” books that he signed sold for Embrace the Journey$7,000.00 each!  One of the ladies who purchased one the books I met in 2011 when she was chosen to appear in my movie “Embrace the Journey” movie that I produced.

Today, the Napoleon Hill Foundation is very prosperous and successful doing a lot of good for many people in the world of business and personal achievement.  Go to any book store and you will find his books still lining the shelves, there not out of charity but because they continue to be best sellers in the 21st Century.

Many come to the sad conclusion that if the greatest teacher of success went financially broke what chance do we have to become wealthy and sustain it.  This conclusion comes mainly because people cannot come up with a logical or sane answer to why he, the great teacher and author of success, Napoleon Hill went broke.  I must confess that I too was complex and had no answer for over 10 years and did what many do, just dismiss it out of my mind and mentally deny it by putting it out of remembrance.

 A Strange Phenomena   By following this pattern of mental dismissal of him going financially broke, yet following his teaching of success my life took on the same success and failure pattern of Napoleon Hill.  This was not and is not an isolated case but in fact is a very strange phenomenon that occurs with the majority of success followers, teachers, authors and entrepreneurs.  For most, they do not make any connection to these events and I was prone to be in that same group until I entered into the greatest business slump in my life that lasted 5 grueling years that almost destroyed me in every sense of the word including physically.

It was the unique discovery of why Napoleon Hill the greatest teacher and author of success and who wrote the greatest book on success ever written went broke.  It was this massive discovery in the midst of the worst storm of my life that stilled the waters and not only brought me out of that financial storm, but brought me back to experience more lasting and permanent success, health, happiness and finances than I ever had experienced.

I am not sure why I discovered what I now term “The Greatest Discovery of the 21st Century”-Why Napoleon Hill went broke.  Was it out of pure good fortune?  Was it the fact that I was stripped and devoid of all answers at the time and brought so low that nothing was left in me and I was now able to hear things that you cannot hear during good times?  What is the Grace of God and His Mercy on me?  I am not sure, but have a feeling it was all the above and some that I am not yet aware of.

One thing I can promise you for sure, Until you know the answer, until this great discovery is revealed to you, lasting success, achievement and financial freedom will always elude you.  It will come within inches of your finger tips yet you will not be able to grasp it.  It will land in your lap only to evaporate, take wings and fly away before you can enjoy it.

Don’t Be the “Low Price” Leader

Far too many small business owners, entrepreneurs and professionals try to follow and emulate Wal Mart’s business model and be the King and Low Price Leader.  It worked for the late Billionaire Sam Walton, but for most entrepreneurs it is the quickest route to Bankruptcy.

The second most common mistakes professionals make, especially true in a challenging economy is to start slashing prices and lowering them in hopes to earn less profit but do more volume.  If you leave your wealth dependent upon the masses and large volume of sales you are going to sink like a lead balloon. If your plan to wealth is based on less profit on more volume…”You Will Work To Hard for to Little”. 

In fact, the only reason you should be selling a low price low profit margin item is to use it as a Lead Generator to attract and obtain new customers.  And if that is your marketing tool, you should be giving it away not trying to sell it.  For instance, if you took my annual income and divided it hourly, it comes to well over $500.00 an hour.  Do you think I am interested in spending an hour or more with people trying to sell them a $50.00 CD?

I only spend time talking with future prospects that I am 99.9 percent sure that I will be paid a minimum of $500.00 an hour.  For example, if I am selling a $2000.00 product of ours, I know that I can spend up to three hours of my time with that person as long as I know there is a 9.99 percent chance that I will sell them that item.  Now how do I position myself to get in that 9.99 percent range?  Before I talk with anyone about our product line, they will have been well processed through a multi-step pre-qualify marketing process that everyone in our data base goes through.  Here are the pre-qualifying steps.

  1. Can my product drastically help them and give them what they want?
  2. Do they want my product
  3. Can they afford my product 

When Yes is the answer to all three of those questions, then and only then do I get in front of anyone and start the sharing process.  Now, when I get in front of someone and I have three hours to close the deal, I can normally get them to say Yes to my offer in 20 minutes or less, however, I give them the whole 3 hours if they want it.  I do not take the money in the shortest time possible.

When people get an email or letter from me offering them a CD or Product for $99.00 most think I am trying to sell them it.  Or you kidding me, I have zero interest in selling $100.00 products, it’s a complete waste of my time and based on my hourly fee, it actually cost me money.  Why then do I do it?  Because I am in the business of helping people and I truly care about their future success.  I make these training CD’s available because I know they are key elements and tools that will help people reach their dreams.  Someone asked me, if that is true, why don’t you just give the training CD’s away?  I said if you are willing to pull your head out of your Ass for 5 minutes I will tell you why.  First, we give away tens of thousands of dollars of free resources every month and second the most injustice thing we can do to someone is to disable them by feeding them instead of teaching them how to fish.

The first law of Success and you better write this down is “Success is Book PostcardNever Free and Always Demands Payment!” No one can Feed You Success, Success must be caught by you, and some kind of financial investment is the only kind of bait Success bites on.

I got a call this morning from someone asking me to financially help them to go on a trip they want to take.  Last week, I got a call from a number of people all asking for favors.  It amazes me that each one of these calls were from people who never took the time to make any deposits in the “Mutual Favor Bank” yet came expecting to make a withdrawal.  It is not that these were bad people, they were just operating on a failure premise that so many people operate on which is this;

I expect to get my request granted because I have a worthy need”. 

Unfortunately, thousands of professionals and businesses operate their marketing systems the same way; “Please be my customer and buy my products because I have financial needs…desperately”  And with this concept, they go into the marketplace expecting to grow their business and income, only to end up with bitter disappointment.

Once you grasp and internalize this principal it will blow a hole in your shorts the size of the Grand Canyon! Everyday you must ask yourself this vital question; “Do I deserve to be wealthy?”

Here is the brutal truth to that question.

If you are not investing at least $10,000 a year on your own self improvement and education you don’t deserve to earn a 6 or 7 figure annual income.

If you are not using the best marketing and sales tools money can buy, you don’t deserve to earn a 6 or 7 figure income.

If you are not prospecting on a massive scale everyday, you don’t deserve a 6 or 7 annual income.

If you are not selling on a massive scale everyday, you don’t deserve a 6 or 7 annual income.

If you don’t work so hard that you look in the mirror at the end of the day and say, “Oh my, I have no Ass, I worked it off”…you don’t deserve a 6 or 7 annual income.

Business in today’s economy is not for the faint hearted.  As one successful entrepreneur once said; “It’s no place for people who can’t stand a lot of disappointment”.  That being a true fact, it has to become your mission that you do everything you can and use every marketing tool available to dilute and offset that constant flow of business disappointment and position yourself to Deserve wealth and success.  Consistent, effective and “Painless Prospecting” is a major factor in qualifying you to deserve success.  You will not double and triple your income because you want or need it, that will only happen when you Deserve It!

If most people would hold up their marketing plans to the light of reality and results, they would find it has more holes in it than my fruit of the loom shorts had back 30 years ago when I was marketing ignorant and financially broke!  Back then, my under ware had so many holes it did not matter which one I put my legs through. I think I invented invisible shorts and the first real G string without realizing it.

What you have to understand about effective marketing is…

Marketing not customers create your income.

Marketing is not something you learn, it’s something you do
