Where There Is Smoke There Is Fire…

At a private lunch with Brian Tracy and the cast of the Journey Movie (www.EmbracetheJourney.net) Brian was sharing some outstanding business advice with all of us.  One thing he said that really stood out and rang a bell with me was; “When you are sharing your business opportunity with your friends and they tell you they are Broke…Believe Them!”  Not only did I laugh so hard I almost CIMG0733farted but I didn’t because I have strong butt muscles, it also took me back in memory 30 years when I would ask, plead, beg and try to convince broke people over and over to buy my product or join my company.  That is like trying to get an infant to be your limousine driver.  Having a mother who was a savvy business owner and entrepreneur, I grew up in an environment of business lingo.  One thing my mother always would say, and I can remember it as far back as 8 years old (I will be 54 this Friday June 14, 2013) is “Where There Is Smoke, There Is Fire”.  After 30 years in business what Brian Tracy said and what my mother used to say is so true.

What I have experienced in all these years of business and working with thousands of people in every field is this, “What you first find in a person, you will find more of it down the road”.  It has never failed when there are signs of trouble up front with a company, a prospect or customer, rough waters will be the platform of that relationship.

When dealing with perspective customers and clients watch out for these warning signs…

  1. If they are broke walk away and don’t try to force your product on them, you will usually lose your product and your profit. 
  1. If they want a payment plan it’s usually a pretty good sign they are broke. 
  1. Those who want to pay less want the most in return. 
  1. If they cannot make a quick buying decision go get a rectal exam, it’s a lot less painful than dealing with this kind of person. 
  1. If they are difficult in the first meeting, lots of unreasonable requests on their part will be in your future. 
  1. Most difficult prospects and customers have a pattern of taking advantage of people and make that their method of operation. 
  1. If they want to make payments they will usually default or find fault with your product or service and try to get it for free or a discount. 
  1. And last but not least, like Brian Tracy said, when they tell you they are broke…believe them.  And as my mom would say…where there is smoke, there is fire! 

Early detection and knowing what signs to look for in dealing with potential and future customers will save you thousands of dollars and untold amounts of grief and misery.  Many years ago I was given a bit of advice from a very wise network marketing Mentor.  The meeting had already started and I was waiting for my guest in the lobby pacing back and forth. I spent a small fortune on dimes in the phone booth (this was way before cell phones were around) trying to call this person at home and of course no answer, (they had not invented answering machines yet either).

As it got later and later and my heart kept sinking deeper and deeper a wise Mentor looked at me and she said; “It’s better to find out early that they are not the right ones than later when you have invested time and money in them”.

The Number One Asset Of All High Income Earners…

artofbusinessipodAll business and financial success comes down to one thing, the ability to make right decisions.  If you study the habits and work ethics of Millionaires and high income earners the one thing that stands out, is their ability to make “Right” decisions and make them almost instantaneously and then rarely if ever change them.  On the hand, if you study those who are always financially struggling and never do anything not worthy in business you will find the dominate trait is they constantly make the “Wrong” decisions and take forever to come to a decision and then change that decision multiple times.

One of the saddest things I come across is highly talented people, or high potential companies that fail completely because they never developed the skill of making good and quick decisions.  My mind is constantly being blown and shorts blown down to my ankles of the stupidity of small business owners, professionals and entrepreneurs who simply cannot make a decision quickly and then when they do make a decision it is the wrong one!  I want to ask them if they are campaigning for the “Jack Ass of the Year Award” because if they are, they are sure to win.

Here is a check list to gauge and predict if failure is headed your way.  If any one of these items is in your present, you can be sure that failure will be in your future.

  1. Seeing Opportunity and then making the wrong decision to let it pass.  There are thousands of reasons why people do this but I think the biggest two factors is fear and complete stupidity.  Once you get into the habit of operating this way, your chances for sustainable wealth or success is almost zero.  Here is the culprit; you have (in your mind) every right reason to justify your wrong decision. 
  1. Keeping the Safety Lock On.  When you cannot make a quick and accurate decision it is like going out in the jungle with a gun but keeping your safety lock on permanent mode.  When a roaring lion comes chasing full speed to eat you, you stand there with a loaded gun unable to save your self.  I have had people tell me, “I never make an instant decision, I always sleep on it for a few days” in which I want to reply “Should you ever wish to succeed in business and finances you must remove your head from your Ass”! 
  1. When The Cheese Looks To Good.  If it was not so sad it would be comical of how “Spooked” people are out there in the marketplace, including business people.  Have you ever watched a bird eating French fires you threw at them?  You just wanted to feed them and yet many would not come get the fries in fear you had ulterior motives.  Those that did come, they were in a constant state of fright and apprehension, moving their head this way and that way, and the slightest sound causes them to take flight.  Even a mouse, when the cheese looks to good and too easy will reject going for it.  If you are “Spooked” you have no business being in business.

Why Napoleon Hill Went Broke… “The Greatest Discovery of the 21st Century”

Think and Grow Rich first published in 1923 is the number one best selling book on personal achievement and success.  Even today, the book still remains a best seller, selling millions of copies each year.  In fact, most self made Millionaires got their first glimpse of wealth from this great book.  Walk into any successful persons office and you will find a copy of this legendary book, “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. mastermindipad

How is it then that the author of the best selling success book and the greatest teacher of success end up broke so many times with little to no assets to his name?  How can the man whose teaching and books are responsible for creating more Millionaires than any other Success teacher in history end up this way?  Many people are shocked when they find out that this great author lived much of his life without riches yet spent most of his adult life teaching others how to acquire them.  His writings and teachings are outstanding and have stood the test of time throughout these many years as testaments that his teachings were sound and proven.

The individuals who followed his teachings starting with nothing and ended up massive amounts of wealth and success are too numerous to record, yet he himself Napoleon Hill was a person that lasting riches eluded.  His life was one of volatile success and failures, riches and lack, with the scales leaning much more on the failure side than the success side.  Although he did hit the wealth factor a couple of times it was short lived and soon took wings never to return again.

For many, this seems to be incomprehensible and without an answer.  How could this be, was it due to lack of personal morals, lack of integrity, reckless living, poor management, a streak of bad luck, down right stupidity?  Like all of us, I am sure he had his share in dabbing in all the above, yet none of those elements was the causative factor of him being the greatest teacher of success yet going broke.

The sad story is told, at one point later in his life, he lived in a small rented room alone, and towards the end was trying to sell the famous typewriter he wrote “Think and Grow Rich” on for $50.00.

I was personally at the event of the Napoleon Hill Foundation Movie in 2009 where two of his “Think and Grow Rich” books that he signed sold for Embrace the Journey$7,000.00 each!  One of the ladies who purchased one the books I met in 2011 when she was chosen to appear in my movie “Embrace the Journey” movie that I produced.

Today, the Napoleon Hill Foundation is very prosperous and successful doing a lot of good for many people in the world of business and personal achievement.  Go to any book store and you will find his books still lining the shelves, there not out of charity but because they continue to be best sellers in the 21st Century.

Many come to the sad conclusion that if the greatest teacher of success went financially broke what chance do we have to become wealthy and sustain it.  This conclusion comes mainly because people cannot come up with a logical or sane answer to why he, the great teacher and author of success, Napoleon Hill went broke.  I must confess that I too was complex and had no answer for over 10 years and did what many do, just dismiss it out of my mind and mentally deny it by putting it out of remembrance.

 A Strange Phenomena   By following this pattern of mental dismissal of him going financially broke, yet following his teaching of success my life took on the same success and failure pattern of Napoleon Hill.  This was not and is not an isolated case but in fact is a very strange phenomenon that occurs with the majority of success followers, teachers, authors and entrepreneurs.  For most, they do not make any connection to these events and I was prone to be in that same group until I entered into the greatest business slump in my life that lasted 5 grueling years that almost destroyed me in every sense of the word including physically.

It was the unique discovery of why Napoleon Hill the greatest teacher and author of success and who wrote the greatest book on success ever written went broke.  It was this massive discovery in the midst of the worst storm of my life that stilled the waters and not only brought me out of that financial storm, but brought me back to experience more lasting and permanent success, health, happiness and finances than I ever had experienced.

I am not sure why I discovered what I now term “The Greatest Discovery of the 21st Century”-Why Napoleon Hill went broke.  Was it out of pure good fortune?  Was it the fact that I was stripped and devoid of all answers at the time and brought so low that nothing was left in me and I was now able to hear things that you cannot hear during good times?  What is the Grace of God and His Mercy on me?  I am not sure, but have a feeling it was all the above and some that I am not yet aware of.

One thing I can promise you for sure, Until you know the answer, until this great discovery is revealed to you, lasting success, achievement and financial freedom will always elude you.  It will come within inches of your finger tips yet you will not be able to grasp it.  It will land in your lap only to evaporate, take wings and fly away before you can enjoy it.

Success Requires… Everything You Got!

groupbooksSome surveys report that 95% of people never achieve the success they pursue and some report that the number is as high as 97%.  Whatever the correct number is, the facts are conclusive that more people fail to reach their dreams that those who do achieve them.  It’s easy to dream about the lifestyle and income you desire, we put up dream boards, say affirmations until the poly grip glue on dentures dissolves, we write out goals, visions and statements.  These are all really good and necessary things to do, but we must address in spite of all these positive things we do, why so many fail to achieve their ultimate goals?

It all comes down to this, the high cost of success!  One of the wealthiest men on earth was asked what does it take to be successful.  He said: “It comes down to two things:’

  1. Decide what you want
  2. Find out the price of what you want and then pay for it 

When it comes down to individual success, everyone can afford it, but very few are willing to pay for it.  Have you ever had a booming year in business? Most people and companies have.  Have you ever faced a business slump? Of course, the answer for most professionals is yes.  But have you had a business slump last for 5 years?

I have, and it came right after the best year I had ever experienced.  By the end of the fifth year, I was delirious, exhausted, wore out in every aspect and completely devoid of answers and solutions.  During those years I did everything I knew how to do to turn things around and nothing worked.  I did everything that used to work that no longer worked.  There was not a rock that I did not turn over and by the end of the fifth year I had nothing left.

There was no more “end of the rope” no more “running on fumes” it was the worst business experience I ever faced and although I kept telling myself it will turn around, after 5 years that story gets very old.  But after 5 tough years the dry spell ended, I bounced back and came back stronger than ever and started creating “Record Success” all over again.  What you have to realize is that Success is going to cost you everything you got…and then some.

Here are 3 things you must due to avoid such a dry spell and slump:

Let Your Hands Go:  I remember watching a boxing match years ago where the challenger was a very talented and worthy contender for the championship belt.  After every round, his corner kept yelling at him, “You have to let your hands go”.  Each round he was moving, dodging and bobbing but not punching very much.  At the last round, his corner told him the only way you can win this fight is by going in there and letting your hands go, there is no other way.  In business and pursue of your dreams, you have to get in there and let your hands go, you got to fight with everything you have, give it all you got and keep on swinging for the knock out!  For goodness sake Jr. get your ass out there and let your “Hands Go”.

Stand Up and Stand Out:  Standing up is what you do for yourself, standing out is what you do for others.  Standing up is about personal courage, facing down fear, not giving up or giving in.  It is about keeping faith and hope alive, it’s about picking yourself up after every knock down.  Even in the Bible, when great leaders where at the end of their rope and it looked like everything was lost and they were on the ground exhausted, crying and ready to give up, God would tell them, “Stand Up and Get Up”.  Standing out on the other hand is what you do for others. What you do to get noticed in the marketplace and found by your ideal customers.  What makes you different than everybody else?  What makes people want to do business with you instead of others?  What are you doing to make your future customers notice you?  Find out what makes you stand out, and then stick it out and get noticed. 

3. Pay the Price of Success:   Doing many radio shows, the host often asks me at the closing of the program what one last and most important tip I could give people about success.  My answer is always the same; “Success always cost, and it is never sold at bargain or discounted prices, and the sooner you understand and accept this, the faster you will experience success”.

Much failure and misery comes by trying to avoid paying the high price of Success.  Always remember, Good Luck is the by product of Hard Work.  After all is said and done, Success is going to cost you all you got and then some but it is well worth the asking price.  There is only one thing more painful and expensive than the price of Success and that is not paying the and letting your dreams go unfulfilled.

The Worst Sentence You Could Utter…

There are many mistakes we can make in business and recover from, working with the wrong people, selling the wrong product, selling the right product to the wrong market, working too little, partying too much and the list goes on and on but despite them all, we usually can recover from them.

“I don’t have time, I can’t afford, I don’t know how to market and promote my business” 

Let those words come out of your mouth and your business boat will sink like a heavy rock.  The number one thing you must do to keep your business and income alive is become extremely proficient at marketing; email marketing, direct marketing, advertising marketing, word of mouth marketing and every other type of marketing media is available to you.

Millionaire Speakers MarketingPeople often ask me what is the real secret to my success is and I will confess it boils down to this.  I have mastered the art and system of turning an offer into a lead, then turning that lead into a paycheck.  This sounds so easy and simplistic, but it has taken me over 20 years, a lot of hard committed work, and a million dollars to perfect it into predictable wealth system.

It takes boldness, assertiveness, courage, risk, strength, faith and a willingness to exercise “Shameless Self Promotion”.  Success comes the day you get excited about “You” (or your company, product or service).

When you believe down deep in your heart your cause, mission and “you” are the greatest thing since the discovery of sliced cheese; your automatic promotion system will kick in.  This has nothing to do with ego, pride or greed; it has everything to do with understanding the rules of business, service, profit and success.

If you are going to create the income and lifestyle you desire, you are going to have to engage in an all out massive campaign of promoting you!

The story is told that Madonna before she was famous and discovered would write her name all over bus benches and walls.  When her boyfriend asked her why she did that she said “Someday Everybody will know the name Madonna”.  From the get go, she understood the dynamics of Shameless Self Promotion.

Marketing Photos Marketing photos are photos you take with leaders in your industry and Celebrities and if possible have them hold up your product line.  The more photos you take the more impressive “You” become.  Taking photos with Celebrities and then posting them on your website and social media sites go a very long way in building credibility perception, and the more the marketplace sees you with the “in-crowd” the more they desire to do business with you.

3. Write A Daily Blog If you don’t like to write or have time to write a daily blog, hire someone to do it for you!  They are called “Ghost Writers”.  If you want me to write your blog I will be happy to do that, you get the credit I get the cash, works for me. Writing a daily blog is one of the best investments you could ever make in promoting yourself and business.  The key to all business success is to create an audience, turn that audience into a loyal following, which will organically turn them into paying customers.

4. Get On You-Tube Start creating some informational or entertaining videos.  You can get your own YouTube channel and can post as many videos as you like.  In fact, the more you post and publish the more web time you will have.  You have no need to fear that you have no camera talent.  Look at Dr. Oz, this guy in my opinion has to be one of the most untalented individuals that ever stepped in front of a camera yet millions of people watch his show.  To have a lady come on your show on national television and talk about “Vagina Farts”…you have got to be kidding me, but Dr. Oz did it!

Look, if Donald Trump can step in front of a camera with the hair dew he wears, you should have nothing to fear to get in front of one and start filming.  By the way, I think Donald Trump and Dr. Oz are great guys and I have the most utter respect for both of them.  They are true champions in their field, and both prove that it takes no skill or talent to be successful on television, so get your buns in front of the camera and start filming!

5. Prospecting Made Easy

There may not be anything more distasteful in the entire realm of business than prospecting.  For most, it is painful, unfruitful and down right unpleasant.  It is usually done under extreme inner protest, and done extremely poorly.  It is any wonder that it produces disgusting results?  The big culprit in all this misery over prospecting and marketing comes from not understanding the process and having a wrong perspective of it.  Far too many professionals view it as begging people to do something they do not want to do and finding great pleasure in slamming the door shut in our face. 

Okay, maybe they don’t articulate it that way, but I promise you that is the mechanics going on inside their noodle. Rejection is always painful; I do not care how tough you say your skin is, or how much you say it does not bother you.  Getting a No and rejection to your offer is like taking a straight kick to the McNuggets.  It hurts even if you are wearing a Cup or don’t have any McNuggets to be kicked into your stomach!

The good news is there are some pro-active things you can do to soften the blow and pain, and in fact make prospecting a lot easier.

Prospecting is about…

Timing: Timing is everything.  When we show up with our offer to people it is more about timing in their life than our selling skills.  If the timing is right, you can sell hard candy to people with no teeth.  If the timing is not right, you could be exchanging hundred-dollar bills for twenty-dollar bills and people will not take them.  If you think I am exaggerating, I run a lot of sponsorship programs where we offer people $11,000 with no strings attached and hundreds refuse to take it!  I used to think it was due to complete stupidity but I leaned its more about wrong timing for them. 

Finding:  Effective and successful prospecting is about people finding you and not so much of you finding them.  It is about attracting customers, not hunting for customers.  You must become visible in the marketplace so that your ideal customers can find and locate you.  They are spending money on the exact same thing you are selling and they might as well spend it with you.  And they will if they can find you.

Identifying:  When you are prospecting you are really going into the marketplace to identify the people you can help, whose timing is just right and want what you are selling. When you go to the fruit section, do you just close your eyes and pick any fruit on the table?  Hell no, you spend 10 minutes expecting, turning over, poking, touching, picking up, putting back and finally identifying the best ones to put in your basket.  Do you put rotten, bug ridden fruit in your basket? No…then why are you accepting rotten customers for?

Eliminating:  When people say No to your offer they are simply eliminating themselves from your target market list.  You are eliminating them from your radar of ideal customers.  When people say No, they are doing you a big favor, they are saving you time, energy and money.  I had the best experience last Sunday when I went to the Flea Market.  A vendor there had a couple of models I was interested in.  When I asked him the price and he told me, I countered with an offer.  He smiled and said, “No, but thank you for the offer”.  I was so impressed with his come back reply, and one I never heard before that I paid him his asking price (then I grumbled to everyone the whole day that I paid too much for the item!).  When I made my offer to him, he immediately identified me and basically but extremely politely and tactfully said “Your ass is out of here”!

When you understand these four dynamics about prospecting, not only does it become easier, but you will find it more productive as well as profitable.  You will be marketing from an intellectual stand point instead of an emotional standpoint.  I guess you could compare it to wearing a cup made out of iron instead of plastic…

Wisdom Gumbo

Today I want to share a mixture of thoughts, ideas, insights and wisdom that I have gathered over the past 54 years of my life.  I call it “Wisdom Gumbo” because today’s blog has no real structure or format and includes a little bit of everything that creates a whole lot of good!

Have Class! One of the good fortunes I had as a child was having a mother who was a very “classy” lady and nurtured and mentored my brothers and I to have “class” in everything we did from how we treated 3people with respect, how we conducted business (she was a true entrepreneur) to how we dressed and groomed our self. ( Here is a picture of myself as a child.)  A couple of years ago I wanted to see how many books I could find on the subject of “Class” and I could not find one book on the subject and it dawned on me the reason why was because so few people have any.  Having “Class” is a real art, and it takes time and work to develop it, however, it is well worth the investment because it makes life so much better for you and others.

Consider The Source  A few months back my In-laws were in need of a new car, so I decided to give them our new honda fit (which was our second car).  Going back down to just our Mercedes, we needed a little run around putt putt car.  So we went down and purchased a new 2013 Nissan Cube.  I will admit this car has a certain look to it, and you have to be of a certain personality to drive one.  When our 6 year old granddaughter first saw it, she looked at Melinda and she yelled out, “Grandma, you got a Toy Story Car!

Anyway, the other day a perfectly healthy man was on the corner smoking cigarettes and begging for money. As I was at the stop sign, he looking at the Cube said to me; “It must get good gas mileage, but it’s an ugly piece of crap”.  My first response was anger but then I realized who was making the remark, a bum (by choice) with no car!  So, the next time someone offers you a rude or mean comment, consider the source.

Work on You Someone once said to me, “Life is not that hard” Are you kidding me, Life will kick your rear end so high up you will walk around Hunch Back.  Life is tough, challenging, as well as rewarding and fulfilling thinkingand in this Journey it is very easy to get caught up and filled up with stress.  Whenever things are not going right, or I am stressed out and feel like I have more projects than time, I know the only way to fix things is to fix me.  Take a time out and refocus on you, your peace of mind, the spiritual condition of your heart and emotions.  Let go of all the heartache in life and give it to God, because the Bible says “He Cares For You”.  It is amazing how much peace can come when you just utter a simple prayer of Gratitude.  We are not designed to be Superman or Superwoman, we cannot be all things to all people so relax and take some time just for you.

Passion Find out what you want to do and then go for it!  Stop dreaming and start doing. Have the guts and the nuts (no class there…sorry) to go after what you really want.  Stop selling yourself short.  Be willing to pay the price, to do whatever it takes to create the lifestyle you desire.  Spark up your passion and go for it.  Bring a death sentence to excuses.  The biggest book in the world is the “Book of Excuses” and most people are best selling authors in it.  Will it be hard? Will it be scary?  Will I fail a lot?  Yes, Yes and Yes…but Success is worth it all.

Love Your Spouse Melinda and I have now been married for 13 years and Loving your Spouceit has been the best 13 years of my life.  She is my best friend, business partner and loyal companion. When you look at us, we are the most opposite kind of people on the planet.  She is warm and fuzzy and loves to be around people.  I am old grumpy and like being alone.  Her favorite time is when we go to Disneyland; my favorite time is when we are leaving Disneyland! But despite our differences, our marriage is Heaven on Earth because we have chosen to “Love Our Spouse” above all the millions of little things that can make you jump out of your skin.

Make a Decision to Succeed All success starts and ends with one thing, making a decision to succeed.  Be it in your health, marriage, relationships, business or finances, when you come to that “place” where there is no more talking, no more B.S., no more farting around, and you come and make that decision, you will find that your success destination is just around the corner…and that is a good thing.

Have You Failed? We all have, therefore don’t sit back, jump up and make a come back! Forgive yourself, forgive others and then hit the F5 button…the refresh button. Start over, start fresh and start strong.

“The e-book Phenomena” How to turn your e-Book into a Financial Fortune!

The only way to earn more money is by creating more new customers.  This is a very easy equation to understand, the hard part is how to apply it or implement it.  As the creator and publisher of the Power of Mentorship groupbooksbook series, which now has 24 titles, have sold more than 200,000 copies worldwide and can be found on Barnes and Noble.com, and Amazon.com I completely understand the traditional methods and reasons of writing and publishing a book.

The fastest path to cash, more income, new business and customers is by “Attracting Them” not “Prospecting for Them”.  Here is a well-kept secret by every millionaire business person; “The way to get people to take something out of their pockets (money) is to First put something (value) into them”.

Now let’s face it, giving away free printed books can be costly up front, however, giving away an e-book cost nothing and can be as effective as giving away a hard copy of a book.  I create thousands of dollars and entire list of new customers by giving away e-books. Giving away e-books creates value, goodwill and appreciation among those you give them too.

“Giving away a quality e-book is the most cost-effective way to create more business and income on the Planet”.

But beware; not all e-books are equal!  Many people give away books that are public domain and although many of them are very good, most people have them or read them before, therefore it diminishes the “value factor” of them.  But when are giving your prospects and clients an e-book that have chapters by some of the most powerful leaders of the 21st Century, plus you positioning your self as an “Expert” by writing a chapter in this book, how much value do you think that you create for them?
