The Starting Point

Have you ever needed to tackle a very important but extremely daunting task? You stand there scratching your head and wonder “Where in the heck do I start?” Many times our dreams and goals of owning our own business, how to solve business problems and how to just double and triple our income can be like that daunting task; where do we start?

It can be a confusing, frustrating and fearful phase to be in, however, any task no matter how big, complex, daunting or difficult it may be can be accomplished if we simply know where to start.

The starting point for Success is not skill, talent, capital, networks, tools, ability or support.  All Success starts with…”Desire”.  I remember many, many years ago how a trip to Disneyland forever changed my life and future.  I had taken my children to Disneyland and like many young parents, trying to raise a family, it was not easy.  Those were the days they still gave you tickets to get on the rides at Disneyland (many of you reading this were not even born yet).  Anyway, we had to pack our lunch because I could not afford to pay the high prices for the horrible food they served at the park.  However the change came when my kids asked to have a toy like all the other kids in the park and I had to tell them, “Not this time, maybe next time we come”.  

All of a sudden it hit me like a ton of bricks; “I am not going to live in a realm of I can’t afford it while living in a world of opportunity” I was so angry, so disgusted, so ashamed, so frustrated I wanted to go and Kick Goofy in the nuts! (Excuse my frankness and language). It was that desire that turned me from Janitor to Millionaire.  The key for me was that I had True Desire, not fools gold desire.

True Desire Is:  A desire that will not give in to disappointment, setbacks, challenges, excuses, other people’s negative comments, quitting, pain, work, time, and lack of money, lack of education, lack of experience, lack of skill and talent or the devil himself.

Fools Gold Desire Is:  A wish disguised like a desire but gives in and quits to disappointment, setbacks, challenges, excuses, other people’s negative comments, quitting, pain, work, time, lack of money, lack of education, lack of experience, lack of skill and talent and the devil himself.

The interesting thing is that Desire is not only the starting point; Desire is also the “Sustaining Point”.  You should write that down, imprint it on your mind and tattoo it on your butt if you must, but never forget this insight.

The saddest thing I come across on a weekly basis is 95 percent of people contacting our office who have major business and financial challenges, or stuck in low paying jobs that they hate and tell me with gusto that they want change and success only to be unwilling and refuse to do the things they could easily do to make those positive results a reality. To make matters worse, they then offer me an Excuse Why They Can’t make those changes at this time.  Its like throwing a lifeline to a drawing person in the Ocean only to have them refuse the rope, crying for help as they sink down to spend their remaining days with Charlie Tuna at the bottom of the Sea.  Success in life does not ask us to bring talent, skill, ability, money to start the Success Cycle, it only asks us to start with “Desire”.

Master of Money

Until you become a Master of Money you must be a serious student of money. Many people say money is not important yet millions of people are killing themselves trying to get it.  What most don’t understand is that earning money is an art and science based on the foundational principals that anyone can follow.  As a student of money, your paycheck is your report card. Now that reality will kick your chicken McNuggets right to the moon!  The truth of the matter is, we will live with Buckets Full of Money or Buckets Full of Excuses.

The More excuses that flow off our tongue the Less money flows into our pockets. That’s a law, a sound principal of financial creation.  The worst anti-wealth attraction habit that repeals and chases money away from us is the “Habit of Excuses”.  That habit will double and triple your Loss of Income faster than a monkey eats a banana.  What do we replace the Habit of Excuses with?  The Habit of Taking Massive Action Towards Our Dreams!  Now that my friend is one of the most powerful wealth creation laws you can put into practice.

On my phone screen I have a photo of Walt Disney with his quote “The Way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing”.  If you are going to Master Money you will have to have a working understanding of Working Hard and Hard Work.  Working hard and Hard work is as different as Night and Day.

  • Hard Work Breaks Your Back!
  • Working Hard Breaks The Bank! 
  • Hard work is doing something you hate. 

Working hard is consistent, daily, focus and taking massive action doing something you love and are passionate about.

Master Money Key #1.  Controlled Activity.

“I cannot control what you do, but I can control  

What I do and what I do, not what you do,

Creates My Wealth” 

Let me give you an example of that statement.  When I make an offer to the marketplace I cannot control who will say yes and who will say no.  But what I can control is my activity of how many people I present my offer to, and if I present it to enough people, enough people will say yes to make me rich.  If you are not making the money you want (Mastering Money) you are not seeing, talking and presenting your story to enough people…period.  You are in control of your activity and activity is what creates wealth. MastermindGroup

Controlled Activity will defeat the bully of a J.O.B. that you hate, the lack of cash flow in your business and the frustration of not having enough of what you want, be it time, money or relationships.  I will close today with a true story that recently happened to me.

I was at a mall where I own a retail store and was conversing with 2 other business owners and talking about a hot investment we were about to take part of.  As we were talking the mall janitor walked by with his trash can and we all said hello to “Eddie” as we always do.  What I did not know was Eddie over head us talking about this investment.  After I left our group and started walking down the hall, Eddie flagged me down and said; “If there is any room for me in that investment, let me in” and then fled off to return to his duties.

As I walked away I kept thinking about “Eddie” and said to myself, “This is one smart guy, it won’t be long before he goes from janitor to millionaire”.  After a couple of days I met up with Eddie and told him how smart I thought he was to jump on opportunity.  I said you can invest a thousand dollars and make about five thousand dollars profit in 60 days or less.  He said “great, let me talk to my wife tonight and I will get back with you in the morning”.  Next day, he came beaming up to me and said, “My wife said we can’t afford it right now”.

I smiled and said, “I totally understand”.  About three weeks later, I saw “Eddie” again when he told me that last night he and his wife went to the Guitar Center and she bought him a $1600.00 guitar.  I said wow, I didn’t know you knew how to play the guitar?  He said “I don’t but the salesman threw in a book to teach me how”.  I said, “Eddie do you mind if I give you a little advice?”  Please do was his reply.  I said, you told me you could not afford a thousand dollars to make you money, but here you go buy a $1600.00 guitar that you don’t know how to play.  He looked at me and said, “But Don, you don’t understand, we got it on Credit!”

As I smiled I thought this time as I walked away, “This is one stupid bastard”!

M.S.I. Multiple Streams of Income

One major Secret of all wealthy entrepreneurs is that they have all learned how to create MSI systems (Multiple Streams of Income) within their company or outside of their company. Tough As Nails

“News Flash”

If you are going to survive let alone thrive in business you have to be “Tough As Nails”.  Being in business for yourself many times means being in business by yourself and that can be a very daunting experience.  Yes we may have supporters, vendors, and business associates and maybe even employees, but the bottom line is when everyone else goes home, we are left with all the responsibility of business on our shoulders.  There are many times in business that you have to make hard, difficult, sometimes gut wrenching decisions and that requires you to be tough as nails.

Sometimes when you are stuck in business and the wolf is coming to get you, you have to chew your own foot off to break free and escape.  As one man said, “You can’t crawl out of the mud you have to Explode Out of the Mud!”  Listen, Superman or Superwomen have nothing on the Business Entrepreneur.

BusinessIf you are a true Business Entrepreneur even the devil himself gets rectal leakage when he sees you coming!

I often think back to my mentor the late legendary Jim Rohn tell a group of us when we were facing difficult times, “Don’t pray for things to get easier, pray that you get stronger”.  So much wisdom in so few words; I wish I could sit here and tell you that I could make you successful and although the marketplace is filled with “Gurus” who proclaim they can guarantee you success (after you send them $29.95) the truth of the matter is…

“No one can guarantee you Success the best we can do is offer you tools that give you a Fighting Chance to Succeed” 

Ultimately, success or failure is the sole result of what we do or don’t do; the action we take or fail to take leads us down the path of success or the path of failure.  The choice alone is ours.  As a speaker, Mentor and success coach for the past 30 years, the hardest thing I have had to over come was my desire of wanting success for others more than they wanted it for themselves.  Taking that stance creates more pain and disappointment than you want to bear and the fact is, you cannot force anyone to take the necessary actions to give them what they claim they want…Success.

The American Dream of Financial Independence is Alive and Doing Well, and you can have that Dream if…You Simply Take the Time to Learn How to Get It. 

That statement will do more than cause you to double and triple your income, that bit of advice will take you into the Millionaire Zone.  If you are not at the financial place that you want to be at, it’s because you simply have not yet learned how to do it.  When I look back on all the good fortune as well as all the failure I have experienced in business I could pinpoint the “Why” it happened in both circumstances.  Let me share it with you to save you some heartache.

When I succeed it was because I filled by gun chamber with daily, massive, marketing and prospecting bullets and when I failed, I did not. It is as simple as that.  If I had to go into the jungle of business and I only had one tool or weapon I could take, it would be a proven marketing system.  In the world of business you have King Kong, Big Foot and Godzilla all wanting to slap your buns with yellow mustard and eat you like a hot toasty sandwich.  The only way you can defend yourself (and your buns) is having a rock solid, proven marketing system that attracts customers into a buying environment.  As long as you have that you can thrive in the marketplace.  As far as all the other pitfalls of business…well you can handle that because you are “Tough As Nails”.  Right now, there are hundreds of thousands of people buying what you are selling; my closing question to you is…What are you doing to make yourself visible to all those customers who have money in their hand?  A proven marketing plan makes you stand out like a Neon Sign to those who want to put money in your bank account.

Marketing and Sales Is A Science

There are not too many people that would deny we are in the midst of a very tough economy.  While this is true and no one would deny it (except some government politicians) this becomes extremely deceiving to the business person and professional because it’s easy to blame the economy as the source of failure or financial problems.

But the truth of the matter is, as hard as this reality is, the bad economy is not to blame for business or financial failure.  The economy has no more of a negative effect on business as it has on affecting the rising of the Sun or the Tide of the Ocean.  The rising of the Sun and the Tide of the Ocean are based on science not economy, and it takes no genius to understand this. However, what is not so easy to see or understand is that business and its life blood sales are based on science and not the economy as well.

Success in business and finances is founded upon set principals that brig about predictable results.  If you take the right actions you will create the right results, it is as simple as that.  When you take daily, massive, consistent, relentless action using the proper system to your target market, the end result will be a constant flow of new customers and sales.  Money does not disappear, it simply moves which requires constant marketing action on your part.

Show me any business that is failing, and all though there will be many contributing factors to the cause, if you look close enough and hard enough you will find some where in the mix was the wrong system of marketing and sales.

If you want to be guaranteed to succeed in your business or career with predictable results in any type of economy, your daily check list must contain these three elements.

If these three elements are your top daily priority you will be able to predict your income, and business growth with precise exactitude.  The problem is far to many people go about their business with out any exact plan but hoping and even worse expecting an exact outcome.  Do you know how many prospects you have to see before one says yes?  If your answer is no, how could you possibly figure out with mathematical certainty your income or business growth?  The answer is you can’t.  Blind faith is not the road you want to take when it comes to running your business.  Putting on a blind fold will not give you the results you want.

Beating Up the Bully “NO” And his twin brother Rejection

I does not matter how long you been in sales, how good your closing track record is or the kind of front you put on, getting a No to your offer and getting your offer rejected stings.  Now, there are all different kinds of ways people say NO.  Never hear from them again, a polite No thank you (rare), No, No Way, Hell NO, or Get Out!

“This is simply part of the sales profession” says the beer belly, balding sales manager who sits on his rear end at his desk shoving food in his pie hole.  This may be true to some degree, but it does nothing to easy the pain of getting a No, even a soft No still hurts.  To make life worse than having to deal with Mr. Fuzz Brain the sales manager is the fact that “NO” and his twin brother “Rejection” are Bullies.

“NO” will bully and intimidate you and make you want to quit. Its job is to rob you of your self worth, self esteem, self confidence, drive, desire, dreams, determination, courage, faith, hope, income, health and peace.  The darn bully who is Satan himself will even rob you of your family and job!

The “NO” and “Rejection” Bullies are relentless, ruthless, aggressive, combative and darn right ugly and mean.  Just like any Bully in real life, their number one job is to…

“Make Your Life A Living Hell” 

There is only one way to beat up a Bully; Stand up to him and kick his rear-end, even if you have to use a stick and rocks (that is what I used in grade school on bullies who tried to pick on me).  It is time to stop letting the “NO” and “Rejection” Bullies rob you blind and intimidate you.  It is time to join me on the revolution to reverse things and “Beat Up the Bully of “NO” and his twin brother “Rejection”.

Finding Your PassionIf you were in the jungle and King Kong was after you, would you shoot him in the butt with a BB gun and think the mighty giant will leave you alone?  Yet millions of professionals go into the jungle of business everyday and face the King Kong of “NO”’ and only fire back a BB pellet.   You have to shoot King Kong “NO” in the butt with an atomic bomb before he goes down.

So, here are 5 ways to Beat Up The Bullies “NO” and “Rejection”.

  1. Change Your Mindset.  Imagine in your mind as you prospect you are attempting to eliminate all the old work horses in your business stall of quality race horses and you send out a message to the marketplace that says;  “Will all the Jack Asses Please Say No To My Offer!”  Then when a NO or Rejection comes your way, just see in your mind a smiling Giant Jack Ass Standing There saying “That’s Me!”
  2. Change Your Attitude!  A few years ago, I was invited to be in the movie “Go For No” where they interviewed top International leaders on how they dealt with rejection and the word “NO” in the business world.  The main theme of the movie was to change your attitude on the subject of getting a “NO” by realizing that after all is said and done, the very core principals of getting to a “Yes” is going through a lot of “NO” and rejections.  If you know that you have to get so many people to say “NO” before you get a “Yes” then you start to welcome every “NO” with the expectation that you are that much closer to getting your “Yes”.  
  1. Decide Up Front how many times do you have to hear “NO” before you give up and quit.  If you do not decide right up front everyday on every project the number of times you have to get a “NO” in order for you to give up, it will not take many.  For the professional it may be 8-20, for the rookie maybe 4 and for the average less then one, sometimes just a look it will do it!  However, if you post a giant sign on your desk or wall that says “It Will Take Me To Hear NO 10,000 Times Before I Quit” then when “No” or “Rejection” 10, 15, 30, or 50, comes your way it is no big deal in comparison to the number it will take for you to throw in the towel.  So, when the 50th “NO” comes across your desk you just say, “No big deal, I still have 9,950 to go before I quit” 
  1. Use The Right Tools.  One of the most important aspects of success in any trade is the tools you use.  Using the right tool for the right job creates the right results. On the other hand, using the wrong tools for the wrong job creates the wrong results. We all know this intellectually but why we have a hard time applying that to our business is still a mystery to me. 
  1. Use The Right Marketing System.  If I would have to narrow down the most important aspect of business, without hesitation and question I would say it would be having the proper marketing system in place to attract and retain customers.  New business is the life blood of any business.  Here is something I suggest you print and see everyday of your business life…

There is only one of three reasons a business or professional fails in business.

  1. Using the wrong marketing system to attract and retain customers
  2. Not using the right marketing system to attract and retain customers

Prospecting is like picking up Rocks…

Prospecting is like picking up rocks, the majority of them are worthless, a few downright dangerous because they have snakes, scorpions and spiders under them, but there will be those few that are priceless diamonds that fill your bank account with “unlimited wealth for a lifetime” The Mastermind Groupbenefits and results of a lifetime commitment to effective daily marketing is a “unlimited wealth for a lifetime”.  Prospecting is a 3 step process; Pick Up, Inspect, Keep or Toss”.  Prospecting is not about you getting rejected by people, it’s about you rejecting people.  Your marketing system has to be one where every No is an intentional response and result of you First rejecting them as a client.  In a comical aspect it would be like looking for only those who have a brain and people jumping up and saying, “Don’t Choose Me, I Don’t Have One!”  Every No is just like that, and when you view it as such the pain of No’s is not that painful.

The Mindset of a Coast Guard

Did you see the movie Coast Guard with Kevin Costner?  I loved that movie, and the one thing that has stuck in my mind was their mantra “We have to go in (water) but we don’t have to come back”.

When it comes to prospecting today, you have to be relentless, ruthless and unstoppable.  Today business is like a mad ragging sea, sinking business ships by the thousands everyday.  The economy is like the movie “The Perfect Storm”.  With this kind of aggressive and violent business environment your job as a “Prospector” is not trying to find customers so that you can survive by selling them stuff, your role like a Coast Guard is to save customers with your answers and solutions to their problems.

Your ideal customer, the one who is ready to purchase what you have to offer is already out there, in the matrix of the business environment and you dear reader as Coast Guard prospector has to jump in and save them.

Are business and the economy rough and hard?  Does a bear go do-do in the woods?  Everyday you are going to be tempted not to prospect, you will be distracted, things will come up, you will bombarded with no, No, HELL NO! From prospects you are simply attempting to help.  Everything and every element around you and within you will do everything in its nature to keep you from prospecting, marketing and selling, better known as saving the ones lost in the sea of business.

People laugh when they see me wearing my bright red or bright orange shirt that has “Search and Rescue” on the front and back.  Listen, you have to get your mind in the right frame to be a ruthless, relentless Coast Guard marketing and prospecting machine to find (save) your ideal customer.  Here is a tip that will help you double and triple your income, “Business, Prospecting and Marketing Is Not A Game” 

It is the most serious and important type of work you could possibly engage in.  And here is another secret tip to double and triple your income, “Only The Fittest, Strongest and Best Equipped Professional Succeeds in this New Economy”. 

Can you imagine a Coast Guard who is overweight, unfit, ill equipped, untrained and fearful jumping into a raging sea to save people?  Yet this is exactly the type of dynamics that are happening in the world of business everyday which causes people to meet bitter disappointment.  However, it gets worse, because these same people sit at the end of their rope and say with heads in hand and tears in their eyes…”This damn economy done me in”.

“It Doesn’t Make Any Sense”

My older brother Charlie has a saying that drives me and everyone else crazy.  Every time something does not seem logical to him (which is about a thousand times a day) he shouts out, “It doesn’t make any sense”!  Even though his constant statement is as annoying as missing front teeth while eating corn on the cob, it give us a good insight to success and failure in business.

The world of business and the marketplace is a very unique, dynamic to work and serve in because it defies logic and common sense.  However the oxymoron is that although it defies common sense and logic it operates on set principals. I want to welcome everyone to today’s post.  I appreciate everyone who leaves a like post and all those who are referring our daily blog to their friends and family.  Our goal is to provide you with the most cutting edge business, sales, and marketing secrets to help you double and triple your annual income.  I want to expose the biggest deception that is wiping businesses out and causing more stress than people can deal with.  That deception is…”Business is Slow Due To The Economy”.  The reason this belief is so dangerously deadly is because it’s so easy to swallow and accept.  We struggle with this concept because our check book shows shortage and so our heart and emotions buy into the problem being the economy and it overrides our logic when we see malls, Costco stores, and food chains bursting with business!

If your cash flow and business is slow and in trouble the direct cause is not the economy, the cause is you are not making marketing, exposure, prospecting and sales your number one priority everyday.  I wrote a few days ago about our 3 Best Friends, if you did not read that post, do so today.  Ok, here are the three things you must do to solve all your financial problems and create prosperity once again in your business.

  1. Build An Audience.  Unless you are creating an audience and a following, your hopes to stay afloat and in business, let alone double and triple your income is very slim indeed.   Like when Loyed (Jim Carry in Dumber and Dumber) asked the sexy girl he was in love with; “What chance do I have with you…one out of ten?”  She said, “More like one in a million”!  He was so stupid he yelled, “Yes! So I have a chance!”  What are you doing today to build an audience?  You build an audience by “Creating An Atmosphere To Buy” 
  1. Build A System. Your lead generating system to attract and retain customers are your daily blog, weekly ezine and lead generating gifts of CD’s and DVD’s and most important giving away an e-book you co-authored with top international leaders. 
  1. Make An Offer.  Making an offer is a combination of creating an audience, having a system (marketing); creating a buying atmosphere and attracting the right customers (those who are ready to buy and looking for you) with quality give away gifts. 

As we both know, I could not possibly cover all the details on how to do this in a single post, however this gives you an outline of what it is going to take in order for you to not only solve your financial problems but to double and triple your annual income.

Making a sale and creating a customer is as far apart as an idiot and a brain, far as the South Pole is from the North Pole. Every business that is struggling right now has no clue how to create a customer or make a sale.  Here is the formula in a nut shell (this may blow your kahoo-nies right off your butt); You create a customer first and then proceed to make a sale. Just because a person or company buys something from you does not make them a customer.

The way and the only way you create a customer is by sowing, giving and imparting massive amounts of value into their life with a rock solid commitment to solve their problems and give them what they want.  You do that, and you never have to worry about your customer complaining about your price or leaving you for something cheaper.

When I was in the 5th grade I dated older women, those in the 6th grade.  I was the envy of all the 5th grade boys because the only ones they made love to were grass hoppers, lizards and bugs.  Here was my style and how I had such good fortune with the ladies.  Every Friday when I got my allowance I would ride my bike to Sears and I would buy two Christophers, a small stuff animal and as many candy bars as I could. ($5.00 went a long way in 1969).

Then on Monday morning I would pack my backpack (which in 1969 there was no such thing as a backpack for school so I made my own) with all my goodies.  When I got to the bus stop all the 6th grade girls would be gathered and talking and I would walk up and start passing my treats out.  Are you kidding me?  The girls went wild! I was hugged, kissed, and I think even goosed a time or two and as we got on the bus, there I was a welcomed guest with all the older women eating out of my hand.  I was the man with the plan and I did not even know it.  How strange all these years later, that same concept would make me a millionaire!
