Go from Can’t Thinking To How Thinking?

When I share with people the concepts of marketing and how important it is to build a following through emails, free reports and writing a blog, the number one complaint that I hear is “I can’t write or speak in front of people, or I don’t have time to do that”.  If you ever plan to do anything in life, especially earn money, you have to get the “I Can’t Do That” thinking out of your head and shift it to “How Can I Do This?”

It is a small shift in thinking however; it creates Gigantic shifts in results.  Write this down and get it stuck somehow in your brain; “You can do what you can’t do if you don’t know you can’t do it”  I was speaking at a large event with Bob Proctor, Vic Johnson and many others right after we finished filming our hit movie The Power of Mentorship.  It was our first film and I had no experience in film making before.

The Power of Mentorship the MovieIt just popped in my head one day at lunch in June of 2007 to do a movie (maybe it was my cheese burger swimming around in my colon or something), I wrote the idea on a Napkin and six months later we were walking down a Red Carpet to a sold out Theater at our Red Carpet Premier Night at the popular Land Mark Theater in Los Angeles, California.

At the event I was asked how in the world I put a whole movie and Red Carpet together in 6 months. I thought for a moment and said…”It never dawned on me that I couldn’t”. 

When I got the idea to do a movie, if I would have said, I don’t know anything about film making…”I can’t do that” no movie would exist today.  Instead, I asked “How Can I Do a Movie”.  I dug and took action until I found the answer. Now I have produced four movies to my credit.

You can do anything if you simply take the time to learn how to do it.  When we launched our first movie, did I go to film school and then go and do it? Heck no, I went to those who knew how to do films, got a price and then found funding for the film (through marketing that I knew how to do) and presto, my giant Gums and Teeth were on the big screen in six months!  It all started however, in shifting my thinking to I can’t do that to how can I do that?

All our lives we have heard people, many of them well meaning family members the statement “You can’t Do That”.  We have become trained and conditioned to inwardly believe that, which is not true in potential only in our belief system.

The sad thing about this is, we were conditioned in this state of belief at such a young age that we could not defend our self from it.  I have had someone say, “What about little Tommy whose parents always told him he could do anything, and he believed it so much that he went up to the school bully Johnny and picked a fight and Johnny the bully kicked his ass?”  I said if little Tommy had any smarts, he should have taken the time to study a karate book, and then go kick Johnny the bully in the testicles and he would not have got is ass kicked!

You can do anything you want to, but you must first learn the “How”…Study the Karate book before you take on Johnny the Bully!  I challenge you to revise and revamp your thinking for 30 days and see what happens.  Every time the thought of “I Can’t Afford That” comes up, just stop and replace it with the thought, “How Can I Afford This Thing?”  Then sit down and write out ten ways you could afford it, no matter how crazy or illogical they may seem.  What this exercise will do for you is get your creative cycle to start flowing and you may be amazed at the ideas that start flooding your mind.

When we owned and operated a Spa, I sold information packages to Massage Therapists and Spa owners titled “How to Earn a Six Figure Income as a Massage Therapists” and “Massage Less and Earn More” or this one; “How To Turn a 60 Minute Session into a Thousand Dollar Paycheck”.  That raised a lot of…Eye Brows!

Show me any business you are in and I can teach you how to develop an Information Product around it and sell it like hot cakes to a starving man!  If you do not have an online Information Product business or adding one on to your current business you are losing out on thousands of dollars in profits.

What’s Marketing?

When my oldest son Eric (now 34 years old) was about 15 years old when he called an ad offering a job.  Since this was his first experience at seeking work he called the phone number on the ad.  When the receptionist gave him a brief description of the job she then asked him to send in his resume, in which he shouted out to her, “What’s A Resume?” 

Once she explained what a resume was, he asked for directions how to get to the place of business to drop it off.  She asked him, “Where are you coming from?” he said, “My Home”.  I kid you not, that is a true story!

Living in Southern California, I am surrounded with businesses every way I look.  Driving to dinner tonight with my wife Melinda we would see building after building with For Lease signs on them.  On many of them it was just a few months ago that they were open for business only to close its door because they could not financially make it. The Journey Movie

It would be very easy to look at this situation and blame it on the economy, but unfortunately it was not the economy that caused them to fail.  Granted, this economy did demand of them (as it does to all of us) to step up to the plate and deliver.  However, they did not have an economy problem, cash flow problem or even a profit problem; they had a Major Marketing Problem.

As I was on his site, I went to his product and store page and found out that his fee for a One day coaching session is $10,000 plus first class airfare!  I almost needed smelling salts to keep me from fainting. I jumped and yelled, “I am ripping myself off, I charge way to little for my services…Dang Gum It, My Fee’s Are Going Up!”

My shock was not at his fee, but how many had signed up for it and was paying it!  While the majority of people are crying the blues about how hard business is and the economy is so bad, there are thousands of business people out there in every field raking in the dough because there is No Shortage of People out there who are willing to shell it out!

There is only an over abundance of professionals charging to little!  Let this concept roll around in your skull a few times and see if loosens up some Income Insight.  My good friend and business associate Butch Patrick who played “Eddie Munster” in the 1964 hit series “The Munsters” have a Munsters Memorabilia store where we play the show on a big screen TV.  There is one episode where a character shouts out…

“This town if full of fancy Dews”

The majority of our professional population have bought into the lies of this economy making people think that everyone is broke and struggling, when in fact this country and world is really…”Full of Fancy Dews”. 

My advice to you is to go back and Rethink Your Fees, and then consider if you are charging to little.  If you think lowering your price is the key to success you are associating with the wrong crowd.  Lowering your fees doesn’t attract ideal customers, it drives them away and instead attracts customers from Hell and they bring the devil along with them!

Trying To Build Wealth Backwards…

Growing up I was never what you would call “Mechanically Inclined” and perhaps that is why I never liked reading instructions which is why anything I tried to fix or install never came out right.  Unfortunately, most people, professionals and business owners who seek to create and build wealth go about it backwards and this is why they fail to achieve what they seek to accomplish.

Creating WealthLet me give you an example; most people seek to build a company, develop a product or service and put all their energy, time and money into this phase of the business.  Once they exploit this avenue to the tilt they proudly look up and are

 satisfied that it is the best Gizmo that ever hit planet Earth.  Now, after resources are almost depleted, and everyone is worn down and wore out, they go about in the marketplace to sell it.

Big Mistake.  Most of the time this plan leads to bitter disappointment and failure; it is trying to build wealth backwards.  What is the correct way?  This is what only the few know and are unwilling to share with others.  But I am going to revel it to you here.

The most valuable asset of any company is their “List” of customers, clients, prospects and followers.  The first step in building wealth is not building a company, product or service; it is building a “List” which is composed of three elements.

  1. Build an Audience
  2. Develop a Following
  3. Sell Them Products 

You build your list by Lead Generating Products; better known as Free Informational gifts of reports, books, CD’s and DVD’s.  Once they respond to receive your free offer you begin to feed them with more valueable information and then they will on their own accord start to follow you.

Once they start to follow you and you continue to take care of them by solving their problems, and giving them constant value the next organic thing that happens is that they start buying your product line without resistance. 

No more trying to get people to buy things, begging them to sign up on your opportunity, Hell most of the time the stupid bastards won’t even show up to the meeting after they promised you they would and you are left like a glossy eyed Jack Ass pacing the lobby floor tying to call them which of course goes straight to voice mail.

No more cutting prices down so low that all profit is lost just to get the deal.  No more fear of where your next sale or lead is going to come from.  No more headaches, upset stomach and rectal leakage because you just don’t know how you are going to make ends meet this month!

If I had to start from scratch today and if I had no idea what kind of business I wanted to start or product I wanted to sell I would spend 90 percent of my time building my list by giving things away.  You can sustain a very healthy list for a very long time without ever asking them to purchase anything.  This way you have plenty of time to decide what you want to sell and when you are ready, you will have a house full of guest ready to buy!

Now that my friend, is the correct way to build wealth.  Build a List First and then find out what you want to do! The Cure for Chronic Lack

The cure for Chronic Lack is daily, massive and obsessive prospecting and marketing “Activity”.  Mild to severe to chronic financial lack in business can be directly traced back to insufficient prospecting and marketing which results in lack of sales.  When we face any type of financial crunch is never due to external causes, but always internal causes.  As negative and dreary as this sounds, it really is a positive thing because we hold the cure and remedy to fix this condition of lack any time we choose to do so.

However, we must understand that excuses and activity do not mix and cannot coexist in the same atmosphere any more than oil and water mix together. Let’s do some simple math which governs the dynamics of the child’s lemonade stand to a massive comprehensive empire like e-bay.  All business functions on this one dynamic, “the selling of products and/or service for profit. Take this one dynamic away from any business and that business ceases to exist.

Business, product, service, marketing, and leadership have a matrix of diversity yet they all come into synergistic agreement in this one element…”Sales”.  Here is the other intricate dimension that is both simplistic and profound, “Sales do not occur without the element of a customer.  Now as simple as this illustrated equation of mathematical business mechanics is, very few companies or professionals have a working knowledge of this, at least not to a degree that causes them to put it into daily action.

There is however a few companies out there that have a complete understanding of this concept and perhaps you may have heard of some of these firms like…

  • Disneyland 
  • Wall Mart
  • McDonalds
  • Goggle
  • E-Bay 

Therefore, if sales and customers are the driving force of all businesses and the main factor in Ultra Mega businesses why in the world would are you focusing on other aspects of your business and not making Prospecting and Marketing your Number One Daily Priority?   Do you realize that the above mentioned mega companies make advertising, marketing and sales their Number One Priority?  This called a clue to why they are so successful.

Now I wrote all that to try to get you to realize that you do not have a financial, business, product or service problem, all those are minor things that can be fixed while in the midst of making a profit.  If lack is showing up in your career or business its because you have a marketing problem.  Fix your marketing problem and the rest will be easy to fix.

Depending to grow your business and income on the power of your business card is like shooting Godzilla with a pea shooter and thinking that big monster is going to kill over.  No one in their right mind would be that stupid to believe that…Right? (Please say yes).  Yet millions of professionals and business owners go out into the marketplace with that mighty card expecting that they are going to change their financial and business conditions around for the better.

How effective are business cards?

As a business owner like any other profession, you need more customers, more sales, and more bottom line profits.  So let me ask you, how many clients, referrals and money can you directly trace back to being results of your business card?

Forget Plan B If You Don’t Have Plan A

Almost on a weekly basis I talk with individuals who try to explain to me a new business concept or explain what exactly their company does.  After 30 to 45 minutes of patient listening I have no clue of what they are trying to say and the strange thing is, neither do they!  It is just a bunch of exciting garble that eventually ends up producing absolutely nothing.

The Journey MovieAt a pool side, asking the man next to me what he did, it took him 30 minutes of non stop talking to finally explain that he was into Network Marketing.  I remember another time an individual trying to explain the answer to my simple question of “What do you do for a living?” Taking 15 minutes to answer the question he said that he was a “Multiple Transporter of humans to a higher level”.  I wasn’t trying to be funny but I said, “You are a Bus Driver?”   I was a hundred percent serious!

If you are going to even have the remotest chance of doubling and tripling your income you must know what business you are in.  Now that seems like anyone in business would be able to answer that, but shockingly I have found less then two percent could give me the correct answer.  To cut through all the blubber of garble trying to figure out and explain what you do, all business comes down to just two things.  Learn this and your money worries will be forever over.  All business comes down to…

And How Do You Plan To Sell It?”

One main reason professionals and business owners are drowning financially is because they are surrounded with tons and tons of Business Blubber that does not allow the business of cash flow to reach their enterprise which is Attracting and Retaining Customers.  If clients are paying my $500.00 per hour consulting fees they can ramble on non stop until their Poly Grip Glue dissolves and their choppers begin to wobble.  However, if you are on my time, the moment you start to get lost in a mixture of Business Blubber (which is usually the first 3-5 minutes) I cut through the chase and say;

Which of course would be Mike Wolfe which is the main character on “American Pickers”.  Well, last night I was able to make that happen, which is the reason I missed writing on Friday.

Whatever business and industry I venture into I associate with the top celebrities like Bob Proctor, Brian Tracy, Les Brown, Marie Diamond, Vic Johnson, the late Zig Ziglar, Jim Rhon, Charlie Jones, Butch Patrick (Eddie Munster) and many, many more.

Here is the big question, How do I do it?  The answer is, right from the start, before I had anything or did anything, I positioned myself as an “Expert”.

When I share with people the high value and the monetary rewards of becoming an Expert in your field brings to your bank account, the most common response I get is, “But Don, I Am Not An Expert”.  The truth of the matter is, any competent professional in any field can create and wear the label of “Expert”.  For myself and many of my students/clients just creating and wearing the label of “Expert” instantaneously doubles and triples our income and fees without changing one thing to our business service menu.  It is the fastest, most effective and moral thing you can do to drastically increase your income.  Here is a Millionaire Secret that is an absolute fact; “People psychologically feel better paying you more instead of less for your products and services”.  Many if not most professionals don’t believe this or disagree with this statement and that is one reason they are “Over Worked and Under Paid”. 

People tell me I can label myself an “Expert” because we have published 26 books, have over 200,000 printed copies in the marketplace and a million e-book copies worldwide and produced four hit movies starring International Leaders like Brian Tracy, Bob Proctor and Les Brown.  However, these accomplishments do not qualify me as an “Expert”.  My self label of “Expert” first, allowed me to accomplish all these things.

I was an “Expert” before I ever published one book. Who said I was an “Expert”?  My own “Freak’n Lips” said so!  And everyone believed it including myself and then I went out and accomplished these things.   But do not be mislead, there is a plan with definite instructions and actions to becoming an “Expert” and my Mentors taught me how.

When I put the “Expert Plan” into action, I went from selling my programs at $49.00 in which it is was like pulling teeth getting anyone to buy them, to raising my price to $5000.00 and up and had more people sign up in a week than I had in 8 months at $49.00. The only thing I changed was being a professional to a title of “Expert” and having the Kahoo-nies to raise my prices and that was it!  Not only were people happy to pay me $5000.00 and up to $25000.00 for my services, they started writing all kinds of testimonies about how great my products were.  And if that is not enough to make your choppers fall out, here is the real kicker.  People started actually using my products and created the most amazing results.  Robin Jay, my close friend and student took our courses and created her own best selling book series “Power of The Platform” and produced a top notch movie with Jack Canfield.  You have to see her website at www.RobinJay.com 

When I was a Janitor, I swear I was the best one around.  I took pride in scrubbing those floors, cleaning those restrooms and keeping things clean.  I charged top dollar for my services in those days which was in 1979 because I was working as an Expert.  Now if I would have known about this “Expert” title stuff, I would have charged f our times what I did and I would of got it!
